Abbie's Part
Ever since Abbie was 10-years old, she wanted to help animals and give them a voice. The idea was a 'caring for pets club'. "I made membership cards for all my friends who were interested and we had our first club meeting in the cubby house on the farm. Unfortunately the 'caring for pets club' didn't last very long." She says she was really sad about this at the time, but now there is an 'animal club' and Abbie is a part of it as their "Animal Club Ambassador". In 2007 along with Hugo Weaving, Abbie Cornish joined philanthropist Brian Sherman AM and Director Ondine Sherman at the third annual
Voiceless Grants Awards Event. At the announcement she said, "I am honoured to share the stage with
Voiceless Ambassador, Hugo Weaving."
"I think the work of Voiceless is really wonderful. It is about education and influencing the law," She says. "I am proud to be the Animal Club Ambassador and to be actively involved in the Club's activities. Children have a natural compassion for animals and anything that can help foster this is a cause worth supporting. Animal Club informs school children about a broad spectrum of animal protection issues."
"Young people from all walks of life care about animals and want to help protect them. In fact, millions of Aussie children and teens share their homes or properties with animals, be it companion animals, farm animals or wildlife."
"Educate yourself as much as possible. Take action, for example; buy organic and cruelty free products, avoid fur and leather, get involved with like minded people, inform others of the facts, and if it is right for you - becoming a vegetarian."
Animal Club asked Abbie in a recent interview which animal protection issues upset her the most she replied: "The situation with the bears in China being farmed for their stomach bile really overwhelms me. Japanese whaling, the clubbing of seals for furs, animal transport conditions and of course, our issues here at home, and all over the world of factory farming - pigs, cows, and chickens." She says if there is one thing she could do for animals it would be to "Abolish suffering."
About The Foundations
What has now become Australia's most acclaimed animal protection event. In 2007 Voiceless awarded up to $20,000 each for a variety of projects that are all inspired by a common theme: respect and compassion for animals.
Voiceless acts in the most practical of ways to fund projects across the country whose goal is to ameliorate the lives of animals. "The foundation is a small part of what has become a large and I would hope irreversible movement among human beings to make this planet a less harsh and deadly place for all those to whom it is the one and only home." Abbie says.
Animal Club was created by Voiceless. Do you care about animals? Want to help protect them? Then get inspired, informed and active for animals by starting an Animal Club at your school. Animal Club is a national network of clubs around Australia.
