A little catch up on Abbie’s films. Madonna’s W.E. is now out here in the UK and in limited release in Los Angeles and New York. It will expand in the States on February 3. I can’t wait to see it soon myself!

David Riker’s The Girl is now in post-production and it will be released sometime in 2012. Abbie is currently filming the role of Kaya in the Martin McDonagh directed Seven Psychopaths, which is also due out later on this year. It sees her star alongside such heavyweights as Christopher Walken, Tom Waits, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson and Colin Farrell.

I’ll leave you with a couple of new photoshoot additions. These were taken at the Toronto Film Festival last year and I think they really capture Abbie’s otherworldly beauty. Enjoy!

The three-minute promo teases the upcoming drama’s twin storylines, which detail the affair between King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, and a contemporary romance between a married woman and a Russian security guard.

Stars Abbie Cornish, Andrea Riseborough, James d’Arcy and Oscar Isaac can all be glimpsed in the trailer, which is set to a dramatic violin and piano score.

W.E. serves as Madonna’s second directorial outing after 2008′s Filth and Wisdom.

The movie’s UK premiere takes place on October 23 in Leicester Square as part of the London Film Festival. It will be released in cinemas in the US on December 9, and in the UK on January 12, 2012.

W.E. first screened at the Venice Film Festival last month, where it was met with mixed reviews from critics.

My thoughts regarding the film strongly echo Mycah’s review, which you can read on the film page by clicking on the link above. Namely, that Abbie does her best with the given material, despite the small role and rather underdeveloped character. To me Lindy is the heart of the movie and really the only character that I cared for. Ultimately, it’s a forgettable role that Abbie did not necessarily need to take on, especially following her performance in Bright Star. She is too strong an actress for such a simple role.

Still, the screencaptures are really gorgeous and Abbie looks stunning in every frame, so do have a look!

Axiom Films is thrilled to announce that The Girl, written and directed by David Riker (writer and director of award-winning La Ciudad), starring Abbie Cornish, Will Patton and introducing Maritza Santigo Hernandez as Rosa, has wrapped principal photography in Austin, Texas after an eight week shoot which commenced on 9 May. In addition to shooting in Austin, the film was also shot on location in Oaxaca, Mexico.

The film is produced by Paul Mezey’s Journeyman Pictures and co-produced by Douglas Cummins for producer / distributor Axiom Films with Christian Valdelievre and Tania Zarak. Philipp Engelhorn of Cinereach Films and Nick Quested of Goldcrest Films are executive producers.

The Girl is shot by award-winning cinematographer Martín Boege, edited by Malcolm Jamieson, and the production design is by multi-award winning Salvador Parra.

The Girl tells the story of Ashley Colton (Cornish), a desperate young mother who tries unsuccessfully to turn her life around by smuggling immigrants across the dangerous border between Texas and Mexico—a trade she learns from her hard-living father, Tommy (Patton).

When this quick money scheme fails horribly, she unwillingly ends up travelling across Mexico with a newly orphaned eight-year-old girl from Oaxaca (Hernandez) — embarking on a journey that will change her life forever.

Paul Mezey follows, “It’s been a tremendous experience to work with David, Will and Abbie to bring this story to the screen. Ashley Colton’s journey is epic and full of surprise, taking us from the hard grit world of south Texas to a remote mountain village in southern Mexico. Abbie disappears into this character, delivering an indelible and compelling performance.”

First up, the lovely leading ladies addressed the film’s most outrageous moments.

“I think, for me, when we’re on the B-25 bomber plane and we’re being chased by a dragon and I’m shooting at it,” said Vanessa Hudgens, who plays Blondie. “It’s pretty intense.”

“I got to do this really fun green-screen moment where I was being lowered upside down on a harness 40 feet in the air,” Jena Malone, a.k.a. Rocket in the film, explained. “I had to clear out my mag on my UMP [Universal Machine Pistol] while I was shooting all these robots that I was doing a double-flip over in the middle of a bullet train.”

Jamie Chung, who plays Amber, added that part of the fun of working with green screen, particularly a scene in Mecca, was being able to use your imagination. When asked what she pulled from or where she went to prepare for those moments, Chung said she looked to her director.

“Into Zack Snyder’s mind,” she said. “That was the place that I went.”

Emily Browning (Baby Doll) and Abbie Cornish (Sweet Pea) also touted the fight or “dance” sequences as the most unbelievable.

“My favorite thing to watch with my character is probably the first fight scene in Samurai world,” Browning said. “People have said to me, ‘Oh, so were you just standing there and there was a green screen and they made you look like you were jumping?’ I said, ‘No, I was on wires the whole time’ jumping up and doing crazy things. We did almost a month of wirework at the end of the film. That’s pretty cool to see. It’s almost like a character in a video game or something.”

“I definitely do love a lot of the fighting stuff,” Cornish said. “For me the process of filming ‘World War I’ [an action sequence in the film] was incredible, because we all had solo action pieces so we got to indulge in those action pieces.”

Cornish pointed out Snyder’s use of high-speed cameras that were used to slow certain movements and make them stand out more onscreen.

“I love the moments where you see Vanessa’s character flip her tomahawk and then that awesome throw that she does,” she said. “And when Jenna flips her gun in slow motion, I love that stuff.”

“That’s probably the coolest moment,” Browning agreed.

Jamie started out by explaining the way that costumes helped the girls get into character—and to make the transition as actors from their real-world scenes to the epic dreamworld in which their battle takes place. “We had a lot to play with,” she explained, “with power and strength, but still being really vulnerable. It’s a wide range of different costumes that help put you in a different kind of mood.”

And in some cases, the mood wasn’t good. Jena said of their “institutional” costumes, “We were wearing these gray, drab…frocks! It’s just, like, dirt—you put it on and there’s a weight on your shoulders.”

Although she was quick to add that the depression lifted when the costumes came off: “And the next day we’re wearing these dance warm-up costumes that make you want to stretch and move your legs and move around…and the next day, we’re in our fight uniforms, where it’s like—instantly, you just walk out of your trailer and nobody’s gonna f— with you!”

Of course, it wasn’t just the clothes; to complete their transformations from normal girls to dreamworld warriors, the actresses underwent serious fight training and were spackled with—as Emily pointed out—”a LOT of makeup.”

“It was weird because we went from three months of training—I’d had no makeup on for three months,” she said. “I’d been sweaty and gross and wearing sweatpants…and then I’ve got three pairs of eyelashes on.” And as a testament to how in-character Emily was by the time filming ended, she became so accustomed to her Baby Doll look that she recalled, “At the end of the day, I’d take the eyelashes off and go, ‘Awww.’”

Granted, getting dressed on set took a lot of work—Abbie said that Jena’s fight costume, in particular, was “insane; it was like a corset at the back, and all the layers, and [gestures] right here up to her neck”—but the girls look so bad-ass that…well, we want our own Sucker Punch outfits. And we are leaving the office right now, and we are not coming back until we have purchased fishnet stockings, combat boots and several pairs of leather Lederhosen.

“I think it’s really important to live in the moment,” she says. “Something I’ve noticed as I get older is that I do think about the future more. It’s all positive thinking.” For example, she says, “I can see (having) a child one day, and so I start to take more care of myself.”
