According to the Daily Mail, Andrea Riseborough and Oscar Isaac complete the cast of Madonna’s W.E. after Vera Farmiga and Ewan McGregor parted the project. Filming will begin in July on locations in London, Paris and New York.
Madonna has found her Duchess of Windsor – and it’s all thanks to Margaret Thatcher.
The singer has injected some energy into her once troubled film W.E., about Edward VIII’s Abdication crisis and the so-called romance of the century between Edward and twice-divorced Wallis Simpson, by casting rising star Andrea Riseborough, who portrayed the young Mrs Thatcher in BBC drama The Long Walk To Finchley, as Mrs Simpson, who later became the Duchess of Windsor.
In W.E. (it stands for Wallis and Edward), the script calls for the Duchess’s age to range from late 20s to late 60s.
Colin Vaines, W.E.’s producer, told me Madonna was particularly struck by how well Andrea portrayed the former prime minister – and also by her performance as a schoolgirl in Sam Taylor Wood’s short film Love You More.
A quick hello from Riikka, the co-founder of the site! I’m currently working on bringing the content of Abbie-Cornish.com up-to-date as it hasn’t been updated in quite a while.
I started by doing updates on the projects section. Film pages have been added for W.E. and The Dark Fields, Abbie’s two new films, and the information on Sucker Punch and Bright Star has been updated.
I also updated the Awards & Nominations page with details on the awards Abbie was nominated in 2010 and 2009 as well as updated the Rumored Projects with some details on Wuthering Heights, the film that Abbie dropped out of last year.
Don’t forget that you can follow the updates of Abbie Cornish Online over at Twitter @abbiecornishcom!
It is being reported that Ewan McGregor has signed on to star in W.E.. If this is true, I have to say I’m growing a bit more exited for the film than originally as he’s one of my favorite actors. Although it looks like Abbie won’t have any screentime with him, which kind of sucks.
Ewan McGregor has reportedly joined the growing cast of W.E., Madonna’s movie about Wallis Simpson.
McGregor, according to Digital Spy, will play the lead part of King Edward VIII who abdicated the throne for his American love, divorcee Wallis Simpson.
The website cites Screen Daily as the source of the report. Madonna will employ a similar parallel story to Julie & Julia involving a modern-day woman who becomes obsessed with a historic figure – in this case Simpson. Abbie Cornish is signed on to star.
Abbie just recently inked a new film, which is to be directed by Madonna called W.E. and in a recent comment to Splash News, she said this:
“Madonna’s a strong, independent woman who doesn’t need a man to define her – and that’s admirable.
“She’s studied every aspect of what happened with Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII. It’s a fascinating insight into class and romance.
Madonna’s created a contemporary woman – whom I will play – called Wally, who is fascinated by what happened to Mrs Simpson, and in a way, her story mirrors certain aspects of what happened decades before.”
The movie tells parallel tales about Wallis Simpson in the 1930s and a contemporary woman called Wally Winthrop, who has romantic problems of her own – in addition to the fact that she’s obsessed with the Duchess of Windsor’s life.
Abbie Cornish is being pursued by Madonna to take a prominent role in a film based on the abdication of Edward VIII.
The movie, W.E., tells parallel tales about Wallis Simpson in the 1930s and a contemporary woman called Wally Winthrop, who has romantic problems of her own – in addition to the fact that she’s obsessed with the Duchess of Windsor’s life.
Cornish, who starred opposite Ben Whishaw in Jane Campion’s film Bright Star, is being pursued to play the part of Wally.
Vera Farmiga is set to portray the duchess.
