First of all, apologies for the lack in updates. Life has been very, very hectic lately so updates have been equally slow. I am, however, attempting to play catch up slowly but surely so stay tuned for updates on Abbie Cornish and her career.

A little catch up on Abbie’s films. Madonna’s W.E. is now out here in the UK and in limited release in Los Angeles and New York. It will expand in the States on February 3. I can’t wait to see it soon myself!

David Riker’s The Girl is now in post-production and it will be released sometime in 2012. Abbie is currently filming the role of Kaya in the Martin McDonagh directed Seven Psychopaths, which is also due out later on this year. It sees her star alongside such heavyweights as Christopher Walken, Tom Waits, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson and Colin Farrell.

I’ll leave you with a couple of new photoshoot additions. These were taken at the Toronto Film Festival last year and I think they really capture Abbie’s otherworldly beauty. Enjoy!

The Sucker Punch star will be joining former Bond girl Olga Kurylenko in the male-dominated cast, which already includes Colin Farrell, Christopher Walken, Tom Waits, Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson, reported the New York Daily News.

The 29-year-old Australian actress is said to be playing Kaya, the girlfriend of Colin’s character.

The twisty tale focuses on unemployed actor and part-time dog thief Billy (Sam), who wants to help his best friend, struggling screenwriter Marty – played by Colin – by any means necessary.

He then teams up with Hans (Christopher) and together they steal the beloved Shih Tzu of Charlie (Woody), who then goes on the hunt to find out who took his pet.

Abbie – whose previous movies include Jane Campion’s Bright Star, Limitless and Madonna’s upcoming period drama WE – is currently shooting The Film Stage in Los Angeles.

Events included are the premiere, photocall and Hollywood Foreign Press Association party. Abbie looks absolutely gorgeous at all the events! We will be adding Venice photos soon.

My thoughts regarding the film strongly echo Mycah’s review, which you can read on the film page by clicking on the link above. Namely, that Abbie does her best with the given material, despite the small role and rather underdeveloped character. To me Lindy is the heart of the movie and really the only character that I cared for. Ultimately, it’s a forgettable role that Abbie did not necessarily need to take on, especially following her performance in Bright Star. She is too strong an actress for such a simple role.

Earlier this morning, the Toronto International Film Festival announced the first batch of movies for the line-up for TIFF 2011 and among the listed films was Madonna’s second film W.E. (Weinstein Co. – releasing Dec. 9), starring Abbie Cornish. It will mark the movie’s North American premiere.

W.E. is a romantic exploration of the mysterious connection across decades between two women confronting the consequences of desire. Caught in a loveless Manhattan marriage, abused and frustrated Wally (Abbie Cornish) obsesses over Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough), the stylish American divorcee who captured the heart of Edward the VIII (James D’Arcy) who abdicated the throne as King of England. As the Duchess of Windsor, Wallis spends the rest of her life in the glare of celebrity exile. Inspired by the Duchess’ determination to pursue love in the face of social exile, Wally escapes into the arms of another man (Oscar Isaac) whose love sets her free. Madonna and a world class team of collaborators present a passionate tale of the search for love and the meaning of happiness. W.E. (for Wallis and Edward, forever entwined in the love story of the 20th century) is a rich, cinematic portrayal of two strong women resolved to find romance.

Those on Fiennes’ list are believed to include Abbie Cornish, Imogen Poots and Felicity Jones. For now, though, he is only meeting them — not offering them the role. The film tells the story of Charles Dickens’ secret love affair and is based on Claire Tomalin’s well-researched best-seller.

There has been a lot of project rumours circling around Abbie this past year and most of them have been just that: rumours. As per usual, we’ll keep you updated if things are officialized.

David Riker’s The Girl has completed its eight week shoot and is now in the post-production state. Following the exciting news, we also bring you the first look at Abbie’s character, Ashley Colton. The still features Abbie with Maritza Santigo Hernandez as Rosa.

Axiom Films is thrilled to announce that The Girl, written and directed by David Riker (writer and director of award-winning La Ciudad), starring Abbie Cornish, Will Patton and introducing Maritza Santigo Hernandez as Rosa, has wrapped principal photography in Austin, Texas after an eight week shoot which commenced on 9 May. In addition to shooting in Austin, the film was also shot on location in Oaxaca, Mexico.

The film is produced by Paul Mezey’s Journeyman Pictures and co-produced by Douglas Cummins for producer / distributor Axiom Films with Christian Valdelievre and Tania Zarak. Philipp Engelhorn of Cinereach Films and Nick Quested of Goldcrest Films are executive producers.

The Girl is shot by award-winning cinematographer Martín Boege, edited by Malcolm Jamieson, and the production design is by multi-award winning Salvador Parra.

The Girl tells the story of Ashley Colton (Cornish), a desperate young mother who tries unsuccessfully to turn her life around by smuggling immigrants across the dangerous border between Texas and Mexico—a trade she learns from her hard-living father, Tommy (Patton).

When this quick money scheme fails horribly, she unwillingly ends up travelling across Mexico with a newly orphaned eight-year-old girl from Oaxaca (Hernandez) — embarking on a journey that will change her life forever.

Paul Mezey follows, “It’s been a tremendous experience to work with David, Will and Abbie to bring this story to the screen. Ashley Colton’s journey is epic and full of surprise, taking us from the hard grit world of south Texas to a remote mountain village in southern Mexico. Abbie disappears into this character, delivering an indelible and compelling performance.”

Goldcrest Films International is handling worldwide sales.

The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today that it will release Madonna’s W.E. on December 9, 2011 in New York and Los Angeles. The film will expand to additional markets in December, with wide release anticipated by mid-January. Madonna’s narrative feature directorial debut, W.E. is co-written by Madonna and Alek Keshishian, produced by Madonna and Kris Thykier and executive produced by Scott Franklin. It stars Abbie Cornish, Andrea Riseborough, James D’Arcy, Oscar Isaac, Natalie Dormer, Richard Coyle, James Fox and Laurence Fox. The announcement was made by TWC Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein and TWC President of Theatrical Distribution and Home Entertainment Erik Lomis.

“Madonna beautifully interweaves past and present in W.E. It’s a very smart film, and a stunning feature directorial debut,” said Weinstein. “I’m incredibly excited about this movie and I wanted to give it a prominent release date.”

Madonna is represented by CAA and managed by Untitled Entertainment.

W.E. looks at the fabled romance between American Wallis Simpson and Britain’s King Edward VIII, who famously gave up the throne to marry the woman he loved. More than six decades later, their story enthralls a young woman named Wally Winthrop, who thinks she sees in their devotion a stark contrast to her own unhappy marriage – and an example to follow as she searches for the meaning of true love. The cast features Abbie Cornish, Andrea Riseborough, James D’Arcy and Oscar Isaac

Oliver Stone’s Savages now has both its male leads, with Aaron Johnson and Taylor Kitsch both signing on to play the marijuana drug dealing best friends Ben and Chon. But Stone is still looking for his female lead, and after Jennifer Lawrence dropped out to do The Hunger Games instead, names such like Olivia Wilde were thrown in to the mix. Deadline is now reporting that Abbie Cornish, along with Blake Lively and Teresa Palmer, is reading for the role of O, a friend of Ben and Chon who is kidnapped and held for ransom by drug lords.

Production is due to start in June, and also stars Benicio Del Toro and Salma Hayek. However, Abbie is due to start filming The Girl in April so I do wonder if there would be a conflict of schedules between these two projects. We’ll keep you posted on what happens!

Fox 2000′s sequel Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules easily won the weekend box office race, grossing a hearty $24.4 million and delivering Fox a new franchise. Warner Bros.’ Sucker Punch wasn’t as lucky, grossing $19 million in a soft start for the femme powered action-fantasy, from director Zack Snyder.

Rodrick Rules, based on the beloved childrens’ book series and playing in 3,167 theaters, came in ahead of the original Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which opened a year ago to $22.1 million. Its standout performance reinforces the success that family films can enjoy, even while the rest of the box office suffers.

Sucker Punch, costing at least $75 million to produce, was co-financed by Warners and Legendary Pictures. Internally, Warners had expected the fanboy pic — about a rough-and-tumble group of girls trying to escape from a mental institution — to clear $20 million.

Snyder is incredibly important to Warners, having now directed four films for the studio. His 300 was by far the most successful. Next up for the filmmaker: Superman: Man of Steel.

Warners exec vice president of distribution Jeff Goldstein said Snyder’s core followers turned out for Sucker Punch, but beyond that, the film wasn’t as broad as his other movies. The movie opened in 3,033 theaters.

“Sucker Punch was more narrow. But when you are talking about something as broad as Superman: Man of Steel, the support for Snyder will be colossal,” Goldstein said.

Males made up almost 65% of those buying tickets for Sucker Punch, while a majority of the audience was between the ages of 18 and 35. If any key demo was soft, it was teen boys.

Sucker Punch‘s Imax runs set records. Playing in 229 Imax locations, the movie grossed $4 million for the large format exhibitor, or 21% of the opening weekend gross. That’s the biggest share ever for a 2-D release in Imax, a favorite destination of fanboys.

Overseas, Sucker Punch grossed $7.4 million from 2,145 screens in 23 markets, putting its worldwide bow at $26.4 million.

Two possible problems for Sucker Punch going forward: Poor reviews and a B- CinemaScore, although Goldstein pointed out that younger moviegoers gave the movie an A-.

Back on the top 10 chart, holdovers Limitless and The Lincoln Lawyer both enjoyed strong holds in their second weekend, coming in No. 3 and No. 4 respectively.

Limitless, a win for Relativity Media’s new distribution operation, fell 19% to an estimated $15.2 million for a cume of $41.3 million in its first 10 days.
