The cream of Australian talent in Hollywood gathered yesterday to remember Heath Ledger, in preparation for the late actor’s anticipated gong at Monday’s (AEDT) Academy Awards.
About 150 of the so-called gumleaf mafia, including Ben Lee, Rose Byrne and Abbie Cornish and celebrities such as Ian Thorpe, attended the emotional but celebratory event at the Chateau Marmont hotel in Hollywood.
The Australians in Film organisation used the occasion to present Sydney actor Oliver Ackland, 29, with its inaugural Heath Ledger Scholarship.
Heath Ledger, Abbie’s Candy co-star, was found dead today. The 28-year old actor leaves behind a two-year-old daughter. We want to take a moment to express our most sincere condolences. In my eyes Heath was the most talented actor of his generation and his performances in such films as Brokeback Mountain and Candy will remain in my heart forever.
“There’s no bullshit with Heath. He’s very open and generous. I knew from the moment I auditioned that if I got the opportunity to work with him it would be extraordinary.” – Abbie Cornish
Rest in peace, Heath.
TeenHollywood chatted with Abbie about her roles in Elizabeth as well as past films and the upcoming Stop Loss and Bright Star in a recent interview which you can read below. Abbie talks about things from her favorite Bess costume, corsets, co-stars and more, definitely a great read for Abbie fans!
Seems that the first Queen Elizabeth had a lady-in-waiting named Bess Throckmorton who was younger, prettier and who was able to party with the royal courtiers while the frustrated Queen had to behave. In Elizabeth: The Golden Age, a sequel to 1998′s Elizabeth, the luminous Cate Blanchett is again the virgin queen but Bess is played by pretty young Aussie actress Abbie Cornish. Abbie came from a farm in New South Wales to model as a 13-year-old then co-star in an Aussie soap at age 15. She played a sex-addicted teen in the racy film Somersault and co-stared with Heath Ledger in Candy, a movie about a drug-addicted young couple. You can see her next year in Stop Loss, the film that started all those rumors about her and actor Ryan Phillippe.
This is just a brief note to let you guys know you can stream the majority of the Golden Age Toronto press confrence on your computer over at the official TIFF website. Just select Elizabeth: The Golden Age and the trailer will begin playing, and after you’ll be treated to the press conference!

I have added over 1,000 DVD Screencaptures of Ms. Cornish in Candy, one of my favorite (if not the favorite) roles. I also capped the features available on the US DVD. Abbie is utterly magnetic and the performance would make any person unaware of her a fan. Heath and her are so great together, their chemistry is undeniable. Do yourself the pleasure by seeing this remarkable film. The DVD feature was already available for download.
