Role Rumors

What a pity – Abbie and Michael Fassbender have dropped out of Wuthering Heights and the film is being made “younger” with Gemma Arterton and Ed Westwick. I was really looking forward to this film.

Gemma Arterton and Ed Westwick will play Cathy and Heathcliff in Ecosse Films’ adaptation of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights.

Peter Webber will direct the pic after original helmer John Maybury ankled.

Project has also seen a number of cast changes. Natalie Portman was originally tapped to play the role of Cathy. Scheduling conflicts saw her exit the project before being replaced by Abbie Cornish. Arterton will now play the iconic romantic role after producers opted to go younger with the pic.

Ecosse Films’ Robert Bernstein and Douglas Rae will produce the film with HanWay Films handling the international sales.

I never saw her in this part, I’m glad she’s let it go. If for no other reason than she doesn’t want to become the go-to girl for period pieces. She’ll make her mark with “Bright Star.” Time to move on.

I like both Abbie and Michael, but I can’t say I’m unhappy with Gemma. ;) On the opposite. I haven’t seen anything with Ed Westwick other than Gossip Girl, so that’ll be interesting. Well, if they cast him, he can’t be that bad. However I know for sure that Michael Fassbender would have been great. Lately I saw a lot of his works.

Yeah, obviously I really like Gemma and Ed on GG as well. But I wanted to see Abbie and Michael in the roles and the thought of them making it “younger” sounds a little worrysome to me.

That’s a good point, Patricia. Abbie’s been doing quite a bit of period work recently.

Oh I’ve been there before with the “younger thing” when they chose Ryan Phillippe and Sam Riley ( ) in “Franklyn” instead of Ewan McGregor and Paul Bettany.
Anyway, I wouldn’t worry much for Abbie or Gemma. Many interesting projects will come their way and they’re both still young. And, after all, we don’t know if the “younger thing” is really true. Abbie isn’t “older”. Michael is but he’s not old. He’s like 33. And still very good looking and a fine actor from all I could watch recently.

When the announcement is made that they are castiing “younger,” it’s just a polite way to save face instead of saying that either the original cast dropped out or that they got the money to step up the cast. In this case I would say it was the former.
